Disclaimer
Helpful, but not personal advice.
The guides, checks and first steps on this site are here to help you make your own decisions. Here’s what that means.
Last updated 14 September 2026
The short version
- Everything here is general information. It can’t take your situation into account, so it isn’t legal, financial or professional advice.
- In danger right now? Call 000. Money taken? Call your bank first.
- The privacy check and the footprint checks are a starting point, not a full security audit.
- Apps, settings and services change. Check the official source before you rely on anything important.
- Nothing here limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
General information, not advice
The guides, the framework, the privacy check, the footprint page and Help now are written for everyone, so they can’t allow for your circumstances. For advice about your own situation, talk to someone qualified to give it: a lawyer, your bank, a financial counsellor, the police or an official service.
The checks are a starting point
The privacy check asks a few questions and suggests where to begin. It can’t see your devices or accounts, so it can miss things, and a good result doesn’t mean nothing can go wrong. The footprint checks send you to free tools run by other organisations: what those tools show, and what they do with a search, is up to them.
When something’s gone wrong
Help now lists first steps and official services in Australia, each checked on the service’s own website on 14 September 2026. Numbers and services change. If an official service tells you something different from this site, follow the official service.
Before you change a setting
Security changes can lock you out if something goes wrong. Back up first, keep your recovery codes somewhere safe, and change one thing at a time.
If someone may be watching your phone or accounts, changing them can alert that person. Talk to 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 first, from a phone or computer they can’t get to.
Other websites, apps and tools
Links to other websites, apps and services are there because they’re useful. I don’t control them, and their terms and privacy practices are their own. Naming a product isn’t a promise that it will suit you, or that it will stay the way it is.
Working with me
When you hire me, what’s included is set out in the plan and quote you agree to before any work starts. This page is about the free information on the site.
Responsibility
I work to keep this site accurate and current, but it can’t be perfect. As far as the law allows, Privacy Action Network isn’t responsible for loss that comes from relying on the free information here. Nothing on this page limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
